Know Your Rights If ICE Comes to Your Home or Someone Is Detained
Printable, plain-English reminders. This is general information, not legal advice.
- You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status or where you were born.
- You do not have to open the door unless officers show a valid judicial warrant signed by a judge. Ask them to slip it under the door or hold it to a window.
- You have the right to speak with a lawyer. Do not sign anything before you speak with one.
- Do not sign documents you do not understand. Signing can affect your case and your rights.
- Stay calm and do not run or resist, even if you believe your rights are being violated.
If someone is detained, save this information
- Full legal name and date of birth
- A-number (alien registration number), if known
- Where they were taken and any facility name
- Any paperwork given to the family or the person
- Date and time of the arrest
Use the official ICE Online Detainee Locator to try to find where a person is held. Call the firm if the matter is urgent.
